September 30 is Orange Shirt Day

This Friday, September 30 we are encouraging everyone to wear orange shirts in support of Orange Shirt Day: every child matters.

Please take a minute to watch Phyllis tell her story.

Why Orange Shirts?

The following is taken from the Orange Shirt Day home page.
"Orange Shirt Day is a legacy of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school commemoration event held in Williams Lake, BC, Canada, in the spring of 2013.  It grew out of Phyllis' story of having her shiny new orange shirt taken away on her first day of school at the Mission, and it has become an opportunity to keep the discussion on all aspects of residential schools happening annually.

The date was chosen because it is the time of year in which children were taken from their homes to residential schools, and because it is an opportunity to set the stage for anti-racism and anti-bullying policies for the coming school year.  It also gives teachers time to plan events that will include children, as we want to ensure that we are passing the story and learning on to the next generations.

Orange Shirt Day is also an opportunity for First Nations, local governments, schools and communities to come together in the spirit of reconciliation and hope for generations of children to come."
Please check out the link to Orange Shirt Day as there are many resources available.

3rd Place at Provincials!

Congratulations to our Girls Golf Team who finished in 3rd place at Provincials last week.  They were tied for second place and dropped to third after a count back of strokes (tiebreaker method).

Awesome job!

Temporary Student Parking

The start of the new school year will mark the start of many exciting initiatives.  One such initiative is the construction of the Carpentry Trades Building.  Due to the construction of this facility, we are asking for the school communities cooperation with the issue of parking at the Swan Valley Regional Secondary School.

In order to deal with parking, we would like to encourage the following:
  •   Utilize the busing service provided for students.
  •   Carpool (if able)
There will be temporary parking available in the following areas:
  • Student parking area – there will be a smaller number of parking spots available due to construction.
  • Parking along 3rd Street North (West of Division Office) – In order to be good neighbors with area residents, please park on the south side of the street.
  •  New temporary parking lot – West of School (access from 13 Ave).
We appreciate your cooperation during this time of construction.
